Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

  • Is the MacNaughton Howe Festival wheelchair accessible?

Yes, the event is held in St Catherine’s Church.  There is parking directly outside, ramps to enter and accessible toilets

  • Can children enter into the adult classes of the MacNaughton Howe Festival?

Yes.  Although the children categories are for set age groups the adult classes are open to anyone at all.  It should be noted though that if children enter in the adult classes they will have to pay the small entry fee.

  • I am unable to get to the MacNaughton Howe Festival venue to drop my work off. Can I still enter?

Yes, please contact us and we can liaise with you for you to drop off items to us at an earlier date or time.

  • I am not able to get back to the MacNaughton Howe Festival venue in time to collect my entry. What will happen to it?

Just let us know in advance and we will keep your work safely for you to pick up at a later date

  • Do I have to use a specific glue on the decoupage pictures / cards to be able to enter them into the MacNaughton Howe Festival?

No. Our rules are not that strict and our open minded judges are looking for skill

  • I make lots of handicraft items as my hobby but do also sell a few of them. Can I still enter into the MacNaughton Howe Festival?

Yes, we say the competition is only for amateurs but our definition is that an amateur is someone who follows their craft as a pastime or hobby.  You can sell items but not as your main source of income.

  • If I make entries for the MacNaughton Howe Festival can I sell them at the event?

Yes,  just let us know how much you are selling for.  As visitors arrive we will make them aware of what items are for sale and at what price.  We do ask for a small donation from any sales proceeds.

  • Are there any refreshments available at the MacNaughton Howe Festival?

Yes, the Friends of St Catherine’s Church open The Hub to serve tea, coffee and cakes whilst the inhibition is open,  They ask for donations towards Church Funds.

  • How else does the MacNaughton Howe Festival raise money apart from charging people to enter and visit the competition?

We run a Tombola.   All the prizes are donated by Island Companies and a full list of those companies is displayed next to the Tombola Table.  We also have a few sales tables from which local crafts people can sell their handicrafts (but not enter the competition) and these tables are booked and paid for in advance.

MacNaughton Howe also runs a Sales table throughout the Festival.  Many bargains can be picked up from Wool and other Craft Items, books and a large variety of bargains.

  • Why is the MacNaughton Howe Festival held in October and not in June like it used to be?

We are trying to encourage more schools and children to put forward their work as the childrens entries have dropped very low.  After chatting with a number of schools the feedback was that June is a very difficult time of year as most children are working incredibly hard for their exams.

  • Why are all your photographs of the MacNaughton Howe Festival only from recent years if the event has been going since 1955?

Sadly our past chairman died suddenly and we were unable to retrieve any of the files prior to 2014.  We have been able to access all the articles put into the Isle of Wight County press from the Festival start dates and this file will be available to view at the exhibition.  We also welcome any photos or articles that anyone wants to send to us.
